The manufacturing of Medve processed cheese in Hungary dates back to 1930. Frigyes Stauffer built a cheese factory in Répcelak after relocating to Hungary in the early 1900s.
He put the brown bear used in the coat of arms of Bern Canton of Switzerland, his country, on the packaging of the products he manufactured.
